This work is dedicated to the thousands of children who have lost their parents to substance abuse. All proceeds from the book will go towards helping such children.The opioid epidemic is arguably one of the biggest healthcare and social challenges of all time facing the United States. In addition to taking away precious young lives and destroying families, it has a debilitating effect on communities, counties, states and the entire country. The United States has less than 5 percent of the world’s population, yet consumes roughly 80 percent of the global opioid supply. The personal, economic and societal costs of this crisis have reached epic proportions, prompting President Trump to declare it a public health emergency. This treatise is a humble attempt at laying out the context, key facts related to the magnitude of the opioid crisis, its multi-faceted impact on the society-at-large, primary contributing factors and potential solutions. While many countries in the world are affected by drug abuse and overuse, the worst affected is probably the U.S., where drug overdose has become a large and growing public health crisis in the last two decades. Therefore, the primary focus of this work is the drug and opioid crisis in the U.S. with the expectation that the discussions herein would be relevant to similar situations in other countries.
